The original Pioneer and Sony remotes have the same button functions and signals, they just look different. You will need a Pioneer "Service Remote," which is now impossible to find. The process is the same for every Pioneer DVD/HDD model ever made except the 530/630 series of 2005. No one has asked about this recently on AVS, but if you search old threads for the phrase "Pioneer DVR-520 HDD Replacement" you should be able to get reams of info. The code authorizes the new HDD for the recorder motherboard. The Pioneer recorders cannot format a new hard drive to be compatible on their own: they require a couple of proprietary service accessories that trigger the machine to accept data entry of the nine digit CPRM code number printed on a small white label on the rear panel of the unit. ![]()
